What parging cost looks like in Calgary
Parging is the thin cement coat on the part of the foundation wall that shows above ground, between the soil and the stucco or siding. It gives rough concrete a smooth face. Our guide to what parging is covers the basics, so this page sticks to money.
The most detailed Calgary parging price list we found is the parging cost guide from Calgary Parging, reviewed in May 2026. The firm says its figures draw on the same base of more than 1,360 written stucco repair estimates, issued from 2020 to 2026, that it uses for its stucco guide, and that every price is before GST (5%). These are one contractor’s ranges from its own jobs. They aren’t a Calgary average, and they aren’t a quote for your wall.

The same firm says most residential jobs wrap in 1 to 2 days. Since the prices are before GST, a $1,000 line becomes $1,050 once the 5% is added. Check whether any quote you get shows GST as its own line.
The firm’s guide also lists a recoat that includes waterproofing. We’ve left it out of the table because this site does not offer or arrange waterproofing, and a surface coat won’t solve the question of why water is reaching a foundation. If water is getting into the basement, talk to a foundation or waterproofing specialist, and in some cases an engineer.
Other firms publish stucco repair ranges rather than parging ranges. Calgary Stucco and Slate says, “as a very rough guide only”, that small crack and spot repairs land around $300 to $1,500, without saying whether GST is included. Martini Stone Masonry lists a $250 small patch, before GST, but only as an add-on to a larger job, not as a stand-alone price. We haven’t averaged these with the parging figures above, because the firms are pricing different things.
What pushes parging repair cost up or down
Most of the gap between $345 and $4,850 is scope, and the table shows it: one side of the house is $975 to $1,700 to recoat, the full perimeter $2,350 to $4,000. A longer wall means more material, more prep and more time on site.
Condition of the existing coat. Anything loose has to come off before new material goes on. Parging that sounds hollow when tapped, or is lifting in sheets, usually means more chipping back than a surface crack does. How far that goes often isn’t clear until the loose material is off, which is why a look in person counts for more than a number based on photos.
The finish. A plain cement coat and an acrylic finish are different jobs. Calgary Parging lists an acrylic finish over parging at plus $575 to $1,035, and lists parging with an acrylic stucco finish as its own line at $3,100 to $4,850. If a quote mentions acrylic, ask which of those it is based on.
Colour matching. In its stucco repair guide, the same firm lists colour matching at $230 to $575, before GST. Imasco, a stucco manufacturer, says colour may vary with “weather, texture, job conditions and method of application”. Calgary Parging adds that cement and acrylic finishes age and weather differently, so on a heavily weathered surface a perfect match may not be achievable, and refinishing a full elevation is the alternative.
The wall above the parging. Where parging meets stucco, check both. Martini Stone Masonry says snow piled against stucco softens and crumbles the lowest 12 to 18 inches of the wall. That’s the firm’s claim, but it’s a fair reason to have the base of the stucco looked at while someone is there anyway.
Minimum charges. Small jobs have a floor. Calgary Parging’s parging guide shows a minimum charge of $345 to $520 for a hairline crack, and its stucco guide shows a minimum service call of $550 to $690, both before GST. If you have three small problems, ask for them to be quoted as one visit.
Three example jobs and what the published ranges suggest
These are hypothetical illustrations, not case studies. Each uses Calgary Parging’s published ranges, before GST, and each is a place to start the conversation, not a price for your house.
A hairline crack under a basement window in a Signal Hill home. City of Calgary community figures show 62% of Signal Hill’s dwellings were built between 1991 and 2000, so many of those walls have seen decades of Calgary winters. The City recorded 117 freeze-thaw cycles in 2022, against a 30-year average of 128. If the crack is thin, isn’t changing and stays within the parging, the relevant row is the $345 to $520 minimum charge.
If the same crack has widened, or runs up into the wall above, that changes things. A crack that keeps opening is a question for a foundation specialist or an engineer, and a new surface coat won’t answer it.

Calgary Parging’s garage parging line, which includes crack repair, is $2,750 to $3,450 before GST. That’s a Calgary firm’s range, so a quote in Cochrane may differ, and the contractor should say what they found under the loose material before pricing the repair.
A faded 1990s acrylic finish the owner wants to recolour before selling. Here the foundation coat has to match a refinished wall, and that’s where colour work shows. The relevant lines are the acrylic finish over parging at plus $575 to $1,035 and the colour match at $230 to $575. The contractor may also suggest refinishing a full elevation so the join doesn’t show. Ask for that option priced separately from the patch, so you can compare.

Parging repair or a full recoat: how to decide
Total Exteriors, a Calgary firm, sets out a repair-or-replace test for stucco. It suggests repair when the damage is localized, moisture intrusion is minimal and hasn’t spread, and the majority of the stucco is structurally sound. It suggests replacement when damage is widespread or structural, or moisture problems are extensive. Parging is also a cement coat, so the same thinking is a reasonable starting point.
The price difference is real. Small patch and chip repairs are $400 to $860 in the Calgary Parging guide, and a full-perimeter recoat is $2,350 to $4,000. Ask for both options in writing, with the reasons, so the choice isn’t resting on the contractor’s word alone.
Expect some cracking either way. Imasco says some cracking and efflorescence are inherent to portland cement and are not a reflection of product quality. The City of Calgary says moisture and snow can cause stucco to shrink and crack, and parging sits through the same freeze-thaw cycles.
On lifespan, Calgary Parging says parging “properly applied” lasts 15 to 25 years. That’s the firm’s claim, not a guarantee, and your wall, grading and drainage all play into it. Use it to prompt questions, not as a promise.
Timing and cold-weather limits on parging
Cement products need warmth to cure. Imasco’s specification for traditional stucco says to do no stucco work when air and substrate temperatures are below 4°C for 24 hours before, during and after application. It calls for a moist cure of at least 48 hours and no high-pressure water on the walls for 72 hours. Calgary Parging says stucco cures best above 5°C in dry conditions, typically April through October, and that off-season repairs require heated hoarding.
That guidance is written for stucco. Parging is a cement coat too, so ask your contractor which product they’ll use and what temperature limits its maker sets. Be wary of anyone offering to parge in freezing weather without heated hoarding; the manufacturer limits above sit well above freezing.
If hail or another insured event caused the damage, the City of Calgary advises contacting your home insurance provider before you do any repair work. The Insurance Bureau of Canada suggests you assess and document the damage, and says taking photos can be helpful. This site does not handle, file or negotiate insurance claims. A contractor can give you a written repair estimate that you may pass to your insurer, and the claim is between you and your insurer.
If your home is newer, check your new home warranty before paying for repairs. Hail damage is not a defect, and whether any other parging problem counts as one is for the warranty provider to decide, so don’t assume the warranty applies.
Getting a written quote and checking who gives it
Alberta.ca advises homeowners to “always insist on a written contract” and to “get written estimates from more than one business”. The City of Calgary says contractors are required to have a valid City of Calgary business licence, and you can call 311 to confirm one. Stucco and plastering are not a compulsory-certification trade in Alberta, so a contractor without a trade certificate isn’t breaking any rule. Ask about WCB coverage, past work, and what the contractor does if a repair fails.
Alberta also has a prepaid contracting licence. A contractor who takes money before the work is finished, and who solicits, negotiates or concludes that contract in person away from its own premises, needs one under the Designation of Trades and Businesses Regulation.
