A traditional three-coat system, as specified by Imasco, has a scratch coat of at least 10 mm (3/8 inch) and a brown coat that brings the combined system to 19 mm.
Some walls carry a different system, such as EIFS, and the repair method changes with it. Calgary Parging reports that woodpeckers go after EIFS because the foam behind the finish is softer than concrete and sounds hollow when tapped. Age matters too. Across the city, 26% of occupied dwellings date from 1961 to 1980 and 12% from 1981 to 1990 (2021 figures), so older homes are common well beyond the southwest. In Signal Hill, a West-sector community, 62% of dwellings were built 1991 to 2000. Imasco notes that some cracking and efflorescence are inherent to portland cement, so not every crack means a failed wall.
The weather figures here are city-wide, but they are what southwest walls go through too. In 2022 Calgary recorded 117 freeze-thaw cycles (the 30-year average is 128) and 54 chinook days (average 46). The City of Calgary says stucco does not handle moisture well, and that moisture and snow can cause it to shrink and crack.

Where your downspouts discharge and where snow piles up are worth a look before the visit.
Timing matters as well. Imasco's guidance is no stucco work when air and substrate temperatures are below 4°C for 24 hours before, during and after application, and Calgary Parging says off-season repairs need heated hoarding. The City of Calgary says all communities in the city are equally exposed to hail, so no corner of the southwest is safe or riskier by default. It also says stucco holds up well to flying debris in moderate wind and hail, but severe storms can cause damage. If you think hail has marked your walls, photograph the damage and call your insurer first. The City advises contacting your home insurance provider before any repair work.
