The City says most repair or replacement work does not need a development or building permit. Like-for-like siding needs none, while siding in a different material needs a building permit, and it is worth confirming your project with the City on 311. Alberta.ca advises a written contract, written estimates from more than one business and Workers' Compensation Board coverage, and the City says to call 311 to check a contractor's business licence. A contractor who takes money before the work is finished and sells in person away from its own premises needs an Alberta prepaid contracting licence, which you can check with Service Alberta.
